Through a new project made possible in part by a $15,000 grant from the Taylor Family Farms Foundation, Crittenton Center is working to make healthy food more accessible to the children and families we serve throughout Siouxland. The *Healthy Food for Healthy Families* project will establish convenient “Grab and Go” food shelves at Crittenton Center's emergency youth shelter, supervised apartment living program, childcare centers, and preschools. These shelves will offer fresh produce and nonperishable food items, giving youth and families an accessible way to receive food when they need it. The project will reach families in several ways. Youth living in our residential programs will have additional access to healthy food, while parents and caregivers can receive pre-packed food bags through their regular childcare and preschool routines. Our outreach staff will also have food available to distribute to young people experiencing homelessness. By making food available in the places where children and families already receive services, we can help address immediate needs and make accessing support a little easier. The $15,000 grant from the Taylor Family Farms Foundation will support a $31,900 project, with additional contributions from Crittenton Center, community donors, and volunteers. Once implemented, the project is expected to reach approximately 200 youth and provide food assistance to 200 families, representing an estimated 350 children. “We know that access to nutritious food is an important part of a child's overall health and development,” said Kim Scorza, CEO of Crittenton Center. “This project gives us another way to meet families where they are, address immediate needs, and connect them with additional resources.
