On April 24, 2025, Crittenton Center announces that its innovative Tiny Homes Project, designed to support youth aging out of foster care, has been honored with the prestigious Impact Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Iowa Chapter.

The Impact Award celebrates architectural projects that go beyond traditional design to directly serve social, humanitarian, community, or environmental causes. Crittenton Center’s Tiny Homes stood out for their unique and compassionate approach to addressing a critical gap in housing and support for vulnerable young adults transitioning from foster care into independent living.

The project was brought to life through the vision and expertise of Nathan Kalaher of PLaN Architecture, who served as the lead architect. The homes were constructed by Steve Nelson and team of Nelson Construction, along with contributions from a dedicated team of local contractors and craftsmen. Their collaborative efforts resulted in six thoughtfully designed, fully functional tiny homes situated on the Crittenton Center campus.

“These homes are more than just shelter- they’re a foundation for hope, stability, and independence,” said Kim Scorza, CEO of Crittenton Center. “We are deeply honored that AIA Iowa has recognized the impact of this project, which reflects the power of design to change lives and strengthen our community.”

“Working with the kids and the Crittenton team has awaken us even further to how architects can be community activists. This has been one of the most rewarding projects we’ve been a part of, and we’re excited to see it be recognized for its impact.”- Nathan Kalaher, PLaN Architecture.

Each tiny home offers a safe, dignified space for youth who might otherwise face homelessness after aging out of foster care. The project incorporates trauma-informed principles and was intentionally designed to create a sense of belonging and empowerment for each resident. Additionally, designs were created with the assistance of the youth residing in them.

The AIA Iowa Impact Award affirms the vital role that architecture plays in advancing social good and creating opportunities for vulnerable populations. Crittenton Center remains committed to innovative solutions that serve youth and families across northwest Iowa.
